Question

The following observations are arranged in ascending order. If the median of the data is 19, then find the value of x.
6, 9, 15, x + 4, x + 8, x + 12, 30, 32

A.

13

B.

10

C.

8

D.

5

Correct option is A

Given:
Observations (in ascending order): 6, 9, 15, x + 4, x + 8, x + 12, 30, 32
Median of the data is 19.
Formula Used:
For an even number of observations, the median is the average of the two middle terms.
Median =4th term+5th term2 \frac{4th \ term + 5th \ term}{2}
Solution:
The 4th term is x + 4 and the 5th term is x + 8
So, Median =(x+4)+(x+8)2=2x+122=x+6 \frac{(x + 4) + (x + 8)}{2} = \frac{2x + 12}{2} = x + 6

Since the median is given as 19
x + 6 = 19
Therefore, x = 19 - 6 = 13
