Question

The ages of two persons differ by 14 years. If 4 years ago, the elder one was three times as old as the younger one, then the present age of younger one is:

A.

10 years

B.

12 years

C.

11 years

D.

13 years

Correct option is C

Given:

The difference in the ages of two persons is 14 years.

Four years ago, the elder one was three times as old as the younger one.

Solution:

Let the age of younger one is x years

So, bigger one = x + 14

The condition given is that 4 years ago, the elder's age was three times the younger's age:

x + 14 - 4 = 3(x - 4)

x +10 = 3(x−4)

x+10 = 3x−12

10+12 = 3x−x

22 = 2x

x = 11 years
