Question

Ten years later, Ramesh will be twice as old as Rajiv and five years ago Ramesh was three times as old as Rajiv. Find the present age (in years) of Ramesh.

A.

40

B.

20

C.

50

D.

60

Correct option is C

Given:

Ramesh will be twice as old as Rajiv 10 years later

5 years ago Ramesh was three times as old as Rajiv

Solution:

Let the age of Ramesh and Rajiv 5 years ago was x and y respectively

And x= 3y    …(1)

Ages of Ramesh and Rajiv 10 years later

Ramesh’s age = x+15

Rajiv’s age = y+15

(x+15) = 2(y+15)

Using eq(1)

(3y+15) = 2(y+15)

3y +15 = 2y + 30

3y-2y = 30-15

y = 15

Ramesh’s age 5 years ago = x = 3y = 45years

Ramesh’s present age = 45+5 = 50 years
