    Question

    John is twice as old as Jean. After 3 years, the sum of their ages will be 66 years. What are the present ages of Jean and John, respectively?

    A.

    40 and 20 years

    B.

    42 and 84 years

    C.

    20 and 40 years

    D.

    24 and 48 years

    Correct option is C

     Given:
    John is twice as old as Jean
    After 3 years, the sum of their ages = 66 years
    Solution:
    Let Jean's present age be x years
    Then John's present age = 2x years
    After 3 years:
    Jean's age = x + 3
    John's age = 2x + 3
    Sum of their ages = 66
    (x + 3) + (2x + 3) = 66
    3x + 6 = 66
    3x = 66 - 6 = 60
    x = 603\frac {60}3 = 20
    Jean's present age = x = 20 years
    John's present age = 2x = 40 years
