Question

In an election between Rana and Ranvir, Rana got 40% of the votes and was defeated by 60,000 votes. Find the number of votes polled in favour of Ranvir.

A.

1,60,000

B.

1,20,000

C.

1,70,000

D.

1,80,000

Correct option is D

Given:
Rana got 40% of the votes.
Number of votes Rana defeated = 60000
Solution:
Votes for Rana = 0.4×V
Since Ranvir won, he received the remaining 60% of the votes:
Votes for Ranvir = 0.6×V
Vote difference
Votes for Ranvir-Votes for Rana = 60,000
(0.6×V)-(0.4×V) = 60,000
0.2×V = 60,000
V = 60,0000.2\frac{60,000}{0.2} = 300,000
Calculating votes polled in favour of Ranvir
Votes for Ranvir = 0.6×300,000
= 1,80,000
