    Question

In an election between A and B, 12% of the total voters did not cast their votes and 10% of the votes polledwere declared invalid. A received 56% of the valid votes and defeated B by 4752 votes. How many validvotes did B receive ?

    A.

    17424

    B.

    18522

    C.

    17204

    D.

    17318

    Correct option is A

    Given :

    12% did not vote

Votes polled = 88% of Total voters

10% of votes polled were invalid

Valid votes = 90% of 88% of Total voters

A received 56% of valid votes

B received 44% of valid votes

    A defeated B by 4752 votes

    Solution :

Let total valid votes = V

    Difference of votes
    (56% - 44%) of valid votes = 12% of valid votes
    12% of V = 4752

    V =4752×10012= \frac{4752 \times 100}{12} = 39,600
    Votes received by B

    = 44% of 39,600

    = 44100×39,600\frac{44}{100} \times 39,600 = 17,424
