    Question

    In an election, there were two candidates. One of the candidates secured 48% of the votes and was defeated by the other candidate by 756 votes. Find the total number of votes polled.

    A.

    17,800

    B.

    19,500

    C.

    15,600

    D.

    18900

    Correct option is D

    Given:

    Two-candidate election

    One candidate secured 48% of votes

    He lost by 756 votes

    Find: Total votes = T

    Solution:

    Since only two candidates: Winner’s share = 100% - 48% = 52%

    Victory margin = 52% - 48% = 4% of total votes

    Margin = 4100×\frac{4}{100}\times T

    4100T=756\frac{4}{100}T = 756

    T = 756×1004\frac{756\times 100}{4} = 18,900.
