    Question

In an election, a candidate got 65% of the votes and won by a margin of 900 votes. Find the total number of votes.

    A.

    3500

    B.

    4000

    C.

    3000

    D.

    2500

    Correct option is C

    Given:

Winning candidate got 65% of the votes
Margin of victory = 900 votes

    Formula Used:
    Received Vote% = Vote receivedtotal vote×100\frac{\text{Vote received}}{\text{total vote}}\times 100

    Solution:

If one candidate gets 65%, the other gets 35%
    So, the margin is (65% − 35%) = 30% of total votes

    30% of total votes=900 =>30100×Total Votes=90030\% \text{ of total votes} = 900\\ \ \\ \Rightarrow \frac{30}{100} \times \text{Total Votes} = 900

    Total Votes=900×10030=3000\text{Total Votes} = \frac{900 \times 100}{30} = 3000

Thus, the correct option is (c) 3000
