    Question

    In a right angle triangle with sides 12 cm and 16 cm and hypotenuse 20 cm, the length of altitude drawn on the hypotenuse from the opposite vertex is K. Find the value of K.

    A.

    6.9 cm

    B.

    9.6 cm

    C.

    6.8 cm

    D.

    8.6cm

    Correct option is B

    Given:

    The sides AB and BC of triangle are 12cm,16cm
    Hypotenuse =20cm
    Formula Used:
    Pythagoras’ theorem
    Area of triangle = 12×b×h \frac{1}{2 } \times b× h
    Solution:
    Area of triangle using sides 12cm and 16cm=  12×12×16=96cm2\frac{1}{2} \times 12× 16= 96cm^2
    Area of triangle using hypotenuse and altitude=  12×k×20=10kcm2\frac{1}{2} ×k× 20= 10k cm^2
    But the area of triangle is same in both cases:
    10k =96
    k=9.6cm
