    Question

    If x² − 2xy = 84 and x − y = −10, then the value of y is:

    A.

    2

    B.

    1

    C.

    4

    D.

    3

    Correct option is C

    Given:
    x2 - 2xy = 84
    x - y = -10
    Formula Used:
    (a - b)2 = a2 + b2 - 2ab
    Solution:
    As given
     x – y = -10
    Squaring both sides, we get
    x² + y² - 2xy = 100
    84 + y² = 100
    y = 4
