    Question

If the side length of a square decreases from 7 cm to 5 cm, find the percentage decrease in its area. (Rounded off to 2 decimal places.)

    A.

    49.98%

    B.

    48.99%

    C.

    58.98%

    D.

    48.98%

    Correct option is D

    Given:

Original side of square = 7 cm

New side of square = 5 cm

    Find: Percentage decrease in area

    Formula Used:

    Area of square = side2

    Percentage decrease = Decrease in areaOriginal area×100 \frac{\text{Decrease in area}} {\text{Original area}} \times 100

    Solution:

    Original area = 72 = 49  cm2

    New area = 52 = 25 cm2

    Decrease in area = 49 − 25 = 24 cm²

    Percentage decrease =2449×100 \frac{24}{49} \times 100 ≈ 48.98%
