New side of square = 5 cm

Find: Percentage decrease in area

Formula Used:

Area of square = side2

Percentage decrease = Decrease in areaOriginal area×100 \frac{\text{Decrease in area}} {\text{Original area}} \times 100​​

Solution:

Original area = 72 = 49  cm2

New area = 52 = 25 cm2

Decrease in area = 49 − 25 = 24 cm²

Percentage decrease =2449×100 \frac{24}{49} \times 100​ ≈ 48.98%
