If the mean of 10, 4, 5, 3, 2, 6, 7, 3 is m and the mean of 2, 5, 3, 11, m, 10 is p, then what is the value of (m +p) ?
Question

If the mean of 10, 4, 5, 3, 2, 6, 7, 3 is m and the mean of 2, 5, 3, 11, m, 10 is p, then what is the value of (m +p) ?

A.

8.7

B.

11

C.

12.5

D.

13

Correct option is B

The mean of 10, 4, 5, 3, 2, 6, 7, 3 is their sum divided by the number of numbers. There are 8 numbers, so their sum is:
10 + 4 + 5 + 3 + 2 + 6 + 7 + 3 = 40
Therefore, the mean is 40/8 = 5.
Mean of 2, 5, 3, 11, m, 10, we know m = 5 so, the mean is:
2 + 5 + 3 + 11 + 5 + 10 = 36
36 ÷ 6 = 6
Therefore, the mean of 2, 5, 3, 11, 5, 10 is 6.
Hence, m+p = 5 + 6 = 11
