Question

If the arithmetic mean of 16, 18, 15, 17, p and 14 is 17, then the value of p is:

A.

23

B.

22

C.

21

D.

24

Correct option is B

Given:

The arithmetic mean of 16, 18, 15, 17, p and 14 is 17

Formula used:

Mean = sum of observationsNumber of observations\frac{\text{sum of observations}}{\text{Number of observations}}

Solution:

According to the question:

The sum of mean = (16 + 18 + 15 + 17 + p + 14) = 80 + p

Now,

The correct mean = (80+p)6\frac{ (80 + p)}{6} = 17

=> 80 + p = 102

=> p = (102 – 80)

=> p = 22

∴ The value of p is 22.
