If a + b = 24 and (a − b)² = 268, find the value of product of a and b.
Question

If a + b = 24 and (a − b)² = 268, find the value of product of a and b.

A.

77

B.

110

C.

68

D.

140

Correct option is A

Given:

a + b = 24

(a - b)2 = 268

We need to find the value of the product a × b

Formula Used:

(a + b)2 - (a - b)2 = 4ab

Solution:

(a + b)2 = 242 = 576

Now,

4ab = (a + b)2 - (a - b)2

4ab = 576 - 268

ab = 3084\frac{308}{4} = 77
