    Question

    Find the greatest number which on dividing 1657 and 2037, leaves remainders 6 and 5, respectively.

    A.

    137

    B.

    117

    C.

    112

    D.

    127

    Correct option is D

    Given:
    When dividing 1657, the remainder is 6.
    When dividing 2037, the remainder is 5.
    Solution:
    If a number N leaves a remainder of 6 when dividing 1657, then 1657 − 6 = 1651 is divisible by N.
    Similarly, if N leaves a remainder of 5 when dividing 2037, then 2037 − 5 = 2032 is divisible by N.
    1651 = 13 × 127
    2032 = 4 × 4 × 127
    HCF of 1651 and 2032 = 127
    Thus, The greatest number N is 127.
