Question

Anil spends 40% of his income on rent and 40% of the remaining income on medicines. If he saves ₹7,200 every month, then his monthly income is:

A.

₹22,000

B.

₹20,000

C.

₹36,000

D.

₹25,000

Correct option is B

Given:
Rent expenditure = 40% of monthly income.
Medicine expenditure = 40% of remaining income after rent.
Savings = ₹7,200.
Solution:

Let Anil’s monthly income be ₹ 100x

Expenditure on rent = 40% of 100x = 40x

Remaining income after rent = 100x-40x = 60x

Expenditure on Medicines = 40% of 60x = 24x
Remaining Income overall = 100x- (40x+24x) = 36x
Savings is equal to remaining income after medicines:
36x = 7200

x = 200

Hence Anil’s monthly income = ₹ 100x = 100×200=Rs.20000\times 200 = Rs. 20000
