Question

A tetraploid plant (4X = 60 chromosomes) reproduces by obligate apomixis. However, fertilization of the central cell is required for its proper endosperm development (pseudogamy). The male meiosis in this plant is normal, giving rise to reduced gametes. What will be the chromosome numbers in the embryo and endosperm of the apomictic seeds resulting from pseudogamy?

A.

Embryo = 30; endosperm = 90

B.

Embryo = 60; endosperm = 150

C.

Embryo = 60; endosperm = 30

D.

Embryo = 60; endosperm = 120

Correct option is B

The correct option is (b).

EXPLANATION-

The tetraploid plant has 4X = 60 chromosomes, so the basic number

                                                                                                     X=15.
Embryo: In obligate apomixis, the embryo develops without fertilization and retains the mother's chromosome number.
Therefore, embryo chromosome number = 60.

Endosperm: The central cell contains two polar nuclei, each with the unreduced tetraploid number (4X = 60), so total from central cell =
2×60=120.2 \times 60 = 120.
The pollen is reduced (normal meiosis), so it contributes half the chromosomes of the tetraploid, i.e., 2X = 30 chromosomes.
Therefore, endosperm chromosome number = 120 + 30 = 150.
