Question

A man travelled a distance of 28 km in 8 h. He travelled partly by foot at a speed of 2 km/h and partly on bicycle at a speed of 6 km/h. What was the distance (in km) travelled on foot?

A.

16

B.

18

C.

10

D.

12

Correct option is C

Given:

Total distance = 28 km

Total time = 8 hours

Speed on foot = 2 km/h

Speed on bicycle = 6 km/h

Formula Used:

Time = DistanceSpeed \frac{Distance}{Speed}

Solution:

Let the distance travelled on foot be x km
Then, distance on bicycle = 28 - x km
Now,

x2+28x6=8\frac{x}{2} + \frac{28 - x}{6} = 8

6×(x2+28x6)=6×86 \times \left(\frac{x}{2} + \frac{28 - x}{6}\right) = 6 \times 8

3x + (28 - x) = 48

3x + 28 - x = 48

2x = 20

x = 10

Thus, the distance covered on food = 10 km

Alternate Solution:

5 + 3 units = 8 h

8 unit = 8 h

1 unit = 1 h

now distance on foot = 2×5=10 km2 \times 5 = 10 \ k m
