Question

A certain quantity of a 35% sugar solution is mixed with 8 litres of a 48% sugar solution to obtain a 40% sugar solution. How many litres of the 35% sugar solution was there in the mixture?

A.

12.8

B.

13.6

C.

13.2

D.

12.5

Correct option is A

Given:

- Quantity of 35% sugar solution = x litres

- Quantity of 48% sugar solution = 8 litres

- Concentration of resulting solution = 40% sugar

Concept Used:

Total sugar = Sugar from 35% solution + Sugar from 48% solution

40% × (x + 8) = 35% × x + 48% × 8

Solution:

0.40(x + 8) = 0.35x + 0.48 × 8

0.40x + 3.2 = 0.35x + 3.84

0.40x - 0.35x = 3.84 - 3.2

0.05x = 0.64

x=0.640.05x =\frac{ 0.64}{ 0.05} = 12.8 litres

The quantity of the 35% sugar solution in the mixture is 12.8 litres.
