Question

A 340 m long train crosses a man walking at a speed of 4.5 km/h in the opposite direction in 6 seconds. What is the speed (in km/h) of the train?

A.

203.5

B.

202.8

C.

195.6

D.

199.5

Correct option is D

Given:

Length of train = 340 m

Speed of man = 4.5 km/h (opposite direction)

Time taken = 6 seconds

Formula Used:

Relative speed = DistanceTime \frac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Time}}

Solution:

Relative speed of train + man  = 3406\frac{340}{6} = 56.67 m/s

Convert man’s speed to m/s:

4.5×10003600\frac{4.5 \times 1000}{3600} = 1.25 m/s

Train speed = 56.67 − 1.25 = 55.42 m/s

Convert to km/h:  55.42 ×185 \frac{18}5 = 199.5 km/h
