Question

Two trains are moving in opposite directions at speeds of 50 km/h and 80 km/h. The length of one train is 480 m. The time taken by them to cross each other is 28 seconds. The length (in m) of the other train, correct to 2 decimal places, is:

A.

533.51

B.

530.12

C.

529.39

D.

531.11

Correct option is D

Given:

Speed of the first train = 50 km/h

Speed of the second train = 80 km/h

Length of the first train = 480 meters

Time taken to cross each other = 28 seconds

Formula Used:

Relative speed(opposite direction) = Speed of Train 1 + Speed of Train 2

The formula to calculate the distance is:

Distance = Relative speed × Time

Solution:

Relative Speed = 50 + 80 = 130 km/h = 130 ×518\times \frac5{18}  =  3259\frac{325}{9}  m/s

Total distance covered in 28 seconds:

Total distance = 3259\frac{325}{9}× \times 28 = 1011.11 meters

Length of Train 2 = 1011.11 − 480 = 531.11 meters

Thus, the length of the second train is 531.11 meters
