Objective – To make people aware about the several benefits of investing in an insurance plan or policy.

Nicholas Barbon, an English economist, physician, and financial speculator set up the first fire insurance company in 1666 CE. He came up with this idea after a huge fire in London destroyed the city. After that, Barbon was successful in forming the first actual insurance company known as The Insurance Office, which was located in a small building behind London’s Royal Exchange.

The Day is celebrated to create awareness among youth about the role of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation.

The Government of India decided to celebrate the outstanding contribution made by Late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the field of economic planning and statistical development and hence mark his birth anniversary as ‘National Statistics Day.

Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis is known as the father of Indian Statistics. He was born on 29 June 1893, an Indian statistician and scientist. He devised a measure of comparison between two data sets that are now known as the Mahalanobis distance. He founded Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in December 1931 in Kolkata. He received Padma Vibhushan (1968), Weldon Memorial Prize from the University of Oxford (1944), Fellow of the Royal Society, London(1945).

Sol. Tata Power Solar Systems, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Power, has commissioned India’s largest floating solar power project in Kayamkulam, Kerala.

The solar project is spread over 350-acre water body, backwaters area, having an installed capacity of 6 Megawatt (MWp).

This installation was completed within the stipulated period, despite the arduous challenges of variable water depths, high sea tides, and severe water salinity concerns faced throughout the project’s construction duration.

This project is the first in the Floating Solar Photovoltaic (FSPV) through power purchase agreement category.

A power purchase agreement has been signed with a PSU client, wherein the entire power generated from this plant will be used by Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).

The project reinforces Tata Power Solar’s commitment to leading India’s transition towards a greener future and achieving the collective vision of realizing 500 GW of energy through solar power by 2030.

Sol. The Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD) will be launched the One Health pilot in Bengaluru.

The programme is aimed at bringing stakeholders from animal, human and environment health on a common platform to address challenges.

DAHD in collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) as implementation partner is implementing the One-Health Framework undertaking project in the states of Karnataka and Uttarakhand, the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying.

Sol.   Market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) approved the appointment of former Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India S S Mundra as the chairman of the Board of Directors of BSE Limited.

Mundra will replace the current chairman Justice Vikramajit Sen.

Mundra has held several important positions, including Executive Director of Union Bank of India, Chief Executive of Bank of Baroda (European Operations), amongst others.

He also served as RBI’s nominee on the Financial Stability Board (G20 Forum) and its various committees. He was also the Vice-chair of OECD’s International Network on Financial Education.

Sol. The World Bank approved a USD 245-million loan for the rail logistics project to help reduce India’s high carbon emissions and low modal freight share in the railways.

The Indian Railways project will help India to shift more traffic from road to rail. This will make transport more efficient and reduce millions of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) each year. The project will also incentivise more private sector investment in the railway sector.

The loan, financed through the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, has a maturity of 22 years, including a grace period of seven years.

Indian Railways is the fourth-largest rail network in the world. Total route length of 67,956 km (March 2022).

ESol. The World Bank approved USD 250 million loan for the Indian government’s road safety programme that addresses the high road accident fatality rate in the country.

The programme is aimed to help participating states reduce road crash fatalities and injuries through improved road safety management and institutional reform, and results-based interventions on high-risk roads. It will also strengthen emergency medical and rehabilitation services for post-crash care, the multilateral institution.

With only 1% of the world’s vehicles, India accounts for almost 10% of all crash related deaths.

According to a World Bank study, road crashes are estimated to cost the Indian economy between 5% and 7% of GDP a year.

Official government data show that each year road accidents in India kill about 150,000 people and leave 450,000 injured. More than half of the victims are pedestrians, cyclists, or motorcyclists and almost 84% of all fatalities are among road users between the working ages of 18-60 years.

The India State Support Program for Road Safety, financed by the World Bank, will be implemented in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.

The UPI 123Pay payment allows people to carry out cashless transactions without smartphones or internet connections using feature phones.

The wearable ATM cards functions using applications connected to smart phones. Therefore, it can be switched on or off as per the requirement of the customer.

Acemoney is the first company in India to launch UPI 123Pay services in Malayalam and Tamil. The Reserve Bank of India had launched UPI 123Pay in March this year.

These sensor-based sirens will ring and a red light will turn on when elephants cross the road to alert drivers within a distance of up to 1 kilometre.

Sol. Shanan Dhaka, daughter of Sundana village of Rohtak, has secured the first rank in the examination for admission to the country’s first women’s NDA batch.

Shanan has secured 10th position in Boys’ examination and first position in Girls’ examination across the country.

Selected for lieutenant, Shanan Dhaka, inspired by grandfather Subedar Chandrabhan Dhaka and father Nayak Subedar Vijay Kumar Dhaka, joined the army and chose to serve the country.

Sol. Skalzang Rigzin, the first Indian Mountaineer to climb Mount Annapurna peak without supplemental Oxygen, received a warm welcome in Leh.

Fellow mountaineers received him at the Leh Airport on arrival after the successful summit of two mountains Annapurna and Lhotse, in Nepal.

With 16 days of gap between climb of Mt Annapurna on April 28 and Mt Lhotse on May 14, Skalzang Rigzin has set a record to conquer two summits without oxygen supplements.

The 41-year-old Skalzang Rigzin has 23 years of experience in guiding adventure tourists in mountaineering in Ladakh.

Skalzang Rigzin stated that he intended to climb all nine mountains with peaks between 8,000 and 14,000 metres in height in the future.

International Asteroid Day marks the anniversary of the 1908 Tunguska impact.

In December 2016, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution in order to “observe each year at the international level the anniversary of the Tunguska impact over Siberia, Russian Federation, on 30 June 1908, and to raise public awareness about the asteroid impact hazard.” Tunguska event is the most harmful known asteroid-related event on Earth in recent history.

The theme of Asteroid Day 2022 is “small is beautiful.”

Sol.  International Day of Parliamentarism is observed globally on 30 June every year.

The International Day of Parliamentarism is a time to review the progress that parliaments have made in achieving some key goals to be more representative and move with the times, including carrying out self-assessments, working to include more women and young MPs, and adapting to new technologies.

This Day was first established by the UN General Assembly through a resolution adopted in 2018 which also marked the 129th anniversary of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (I.P.U).

Last year, in 2021, the Day focused on “Youth Empowerment” in Parliament whereas the theme for the International Day of Parliamentarism 2022 is “Public Engagement”.

Sol.Senior advocate KK Venugopal has agreed to continue as Attorney General of India for three more months.

The decision has come after a request from the central government.

The 91-year-old Venugopal was appointed as the Attorney General of India in July 2017 in place of Mukul Rohatgi.

KK Venugopal was initially not willing to continue in the constitutional post due to “personal reasons” but has agreed to continue.

The Attorney-General for India is the chief legal advisor of the Indian government. The Attorney General of India must be a person qualified to be appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court.

The announcement was made by the Election Commission of India.

Sol.The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and data utilization strategies can add USD 500 billion to India’s GDP by 2025, according to a report by the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM).

Sol. Indian hockey stalwart and member of the gold medal winning 1975 World Cup team, Varinder Singh passed away. He was 75.

Singh was part of the gold medal-winning Indian team at the 1975 men’s Hockey World Cup in Kuala Lumpur. Singh was also part of the bronze medal-winning team at the 1972 Munich Olympics and silver medal at 1973 World Cup in Amsterdam.

In 2007, Varinder was conferred with the prestigious Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award.

Sol.NITI Aayog released a report titled ‘India’s Booming Gig and Platform Economy’

The Indian gig workforce is expected to expand to 5 million workers by 2029-30, a 200 per cent jump from 7.7 million now.

The report estimates that gig workers will form 4.1 per cent of the total workforce in India by 2029-2030, from 1.5 per cent now.

The report stated 47 per cent of the jobs are medium-skilled, about 22 per cent are high-skilled, and about 31 per cent are low-skilled.

Sol.Scientists have discovered the world’s largest known bacterium, first to be visible with the naked eye in the brackish waters of a red mangrove swamp in Guadeloupe in the Lesser Antilles. Guadeloupe, an island group, is a French overseas region.

The bacteria named Thiomargarita magnifica is the first that is visible to naked eye and it in the form of white filaments, almost the size of human eyelashes.

Usually bacteria is so small that they can only be seen through a microscope.

It is the biggest single-cell bacteria found up till now.

The thin white strands were found on the surface of decaying mangrove leaves in the swamp.

The bacteria live by oxidizing sulfur.

Sol. Odisha government won the first prize in National MSME Award 2022 to States/UTs for outstanding contribution in the promotion and development of MSME Sector.

Odisha’s Kalahandi district also won the third prize in the category “National MSME Award 2022 to Aspirational districts for outstanding contribution in the promotion and Development of MSME Sector”.

Sol.  The Centre appointed former Punjab DGP Dinkar Gupta as the Director General of National Investigation Agency (NIA) on June 23, 2022.

Sol. Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has becomes the first airport in the country to run completely on hydro and solar power.

This is a part of the airport’s goal to achieve the “Net Zero Carbon Emissions Airport” target by 2030. Around 6% of the Delhi airport’s electricity requirement is met from the onsite solar power plants.

The airport has adopted renewable energy use from the hydropower plant for its demand of the remaining 94%, thus ending its dependency on non-renewable power.

This move will help the Delhi airport in the reduction of indirect energy emissions of up to 200,000 tonnes of CO2 every year.

In 2015, the Cochin International Airport in Kerala became the first airport in the world to run solely using solar energy.

Sol. South Indian Bank has launched a new portal for its corporate EXIM customers named ‘SIB TF Online’.

This portal provides a platform for trade related payments to foreign entities remotely.

In this portal, the customer can initiate the payment request over SIB TF Online after uploading the relevant supporting documents for the transaction.

The bank plans to launch SIB TF Online in phases, with the initial version allowing three types of import remittances such as advance remittance for Imports, remittance against import bill received from overseas bank for collection and payment against Import documents received by the importer directly from overseas suppliers.
