Sol.  United Nations observes 23 August every year as “International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition”.

The Day is observed to inscribe the tragedy of the slave trade in the memory of all peoples.

It is a day to honor the memory of the men and women who, in Saint-Domingue in 1791, revolted and paved the way for the end of slavery and dehumanization.

The day was designated by UNESCO to memorialize the transatlantic slave trade.

The Day was first celebrated in a number of countries, particularly in Haiti on 23 August 1998 and at Goree in Senegal on 23 August 1999.

Sol.  India bagged a total of 17 medals at the recently concluded Thailand Para-Badminton International in Pattaya.

The Indians finished with a total of 4 gold, 5 silver and 8 bronze medals in the tournament.

Out of the 4 gold medals for India, three came in the Women’s singles section. Mandeep Kaur (women’s singles SL3), Nitya Sre (women’s singles SH6) and Manisha Ramdas (women’s singles SU5) all bagged gold medals, while the men’s doubles SL3-SL4 duo of the experienced Pramod Bhagat and Sukant Kadam backed it up with yet another gold medal.

Bhagat (SL3) and Kadam (SL4) also won silver medals in their respective singles division, before Manasi Joshi walked away with three silver medals of her own – women’s singles SL3, women’s doubles SL3-SU5 with Shanthiya, and mixed doubles SL3-SU5 with Ruthick Raghupathi.

Sol.  India’s first indigenously developed Hydrogen fuel cell bus developed by KPIT-CSIR in Pune was launched by Union Minister of State, Dr Jitendra Singh on 21st Aug 2022.

The hydrogen fuel cell uses hydrogen and air to generate electricity, producing only heat and water in the process.

Hydrogen fuel cells like the one present in the bus produce electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen atoms. The two gases react across an electrochemical cell similar to a conventional battery cell to produce electricity, water and small amounts of heat. This electricity is then used by electric motors to propel the vehicle forward.

According to the US Department of Energy, fuel cells work in a similar manner to conventional batteries found in electric vehicles but they do not run out of charge and don’t need to be recharged with electricity.

Sol.  India’s first commercial space situational awareness (SSA) observatory, to track objects as small as 10 cm in size orbiting the earth, will be set up in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand by Digantara, a space sector start-up.

The SSA observatory will help India track any activity in space including that of space debris and military satellites hovering over the region.

Currently, the United States is a dominant player in monitoring space debris with observatories in multiple locations and commercial companies providing additional inputs from across the world.

The observatory will also give India indigenous capabilities to monitor space activity over the subcontinent.

Sol.  In a first, the Uttar Pradesh government is planning to build an Education Township in the state.

As per the Yogi Adityanath government, the education township will be developed on the idea of ‘Single Entry, Multiple Exit’.

The government said the move will provide high-quality education to the youth and equip them with a variety of professional skills in a single place.

Besides, it will provide accommodation and many other facilities to both students and teachers.

Prestigious government and private universities of the country and the world will be able to open their campuses in the township.

Sol. Antim Panghal, a 17-year-old Haryana wrestler has become the first Indian woman wrestler to win Gold Medal at U-20 World Wrestling Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria.

She scored at 8-0 win over Atlyn Shagayeva of Kazakhstan in 53 kg category to achieve this feat.

This gold medal is historic in its own ways as India has never won any gold medal in women’s wrestling at U20 World Championships.

Sonam Malik and Priyanka won silver medals in 62 kg and 65 kg respectively after losing the gold medal bouts.

Sol. On August 22, 2022, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has unveiled the mascot ‘Sheru’ of the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Olympic Games to be held in villages and hamlets in the indoor hall of Sawai Mansingh Stadium and also released the theme song.

The Chief Minister said that a budget provision of Rs. 40 crore has been made for the Rural Olympic Games starting from August 29 in the state.

The main objective of the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Olympics is to find and bring forward rural sportspersons, nurture their talent, encourage them and promote sportsmanship among the common man.

The Chief Minister said that rural Olympics are for all age groups. About 30 lakh players are participating in these games and 2 lakh teams have been formed.

The gold medal winner is being given an increase of Rs 75 lakh to Rs 3 crore, the silver medal winner from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 2 crore and the bronze medal winner from Rs 30 lakh to Rs 1 crore.

The Rajiv Gandhi Rural Olympic Games are scheduled to be held from August 29 to September 1 at the gram panchayat level, September 12 to September 15 at the block level, September 22 to September 25 at the district level and October 2 to October 5 at the state level.

Kabaddi (Boys/Girls), Shooting Ball (Boys), Kho-Kho (Girls), Volleyball (Boys/Girls), Tennis ball Cricket (Boys/Girls) and Hockey 6 sports including (boys/girls category) will be included.

Sol.  India’s first nocturnal zoo will be set up in Kukrail forest area as the Yogi Adityanath government has decided to set up a night safari and biodiversity park on the lines of Singapore in the state capital.

There are 13 day safaris in the country but no night safari.

Minister of Tourism and Culture Jaiveer Singh said the night safari would be developed in 350 acres in the Kukrail forest area, spread over 46 hectares. The zoological park will be set up in 150 acres.

The government has a plan to build a Leopard Safari in 75 acres, a Bear Safari in 60 acres, and a Tiger Safari in 75 acres.

The animals will not be kept in cages but they will roam freely like in the forest.

Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre is a tertiary care hospital of 300-bed capacity and is equipped with modern facilities to treat all types of cancers using every available treatment modalities like Surgery, Radiotherapy and Medical Oncology – Chemotherapy, immunotherapy and Bone marrow transplant. The hospital has been built at a cost of over 660 crore rupees by Tata Memorial Centre, an aided institute under the Department of Atomic Energy.

Sol. South Korea and the United States began their largest joint military drills in years with a resumption of field training.

Sol. Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati have developed an ultrasound-assisted fermentation method to produce a safe sugar substitute called “Xylitol” from bagasse, the residue left after crushing of sugarcane.

According to officials, the new method overcomes operational limitations of chemical methods of synthesis and time delays associated with conventional fermentation.

Xylitol is industrially produced by a chemical reaction in which wood-derived D-xylose, a costly chemical, is treated with nickel catalyst at very high temperatures and pressures that makes the process highly energy consuming.

The species of bat discovered by the team has distinct physical characteristics including long fingers as compared to other species.

It has been named Miniopterus Phillipsi after W W A Philips (1892-1981).

W W A Philips is famous for its contributions to studies on the mammals of Sri Lanka and South Asia.

Earlier, a new species of thick-thumbed bats named ‘Glischropus meghalayanus’ was also discovered in Meghalaya.

Sol.  Germany launched its first fleet of hydrogen-powered passenger trains claiming they are the first of their kind in the world.

The 14 trains use hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity that powers the engines.

The first fleet of hydrogen-powered passenger trains has replaced 15 diesel trains that were previously operated on nonelectrified tracks in Lower Saxony, Germany.

The state governor Stephan Weil said that Lower Saxony has invested a total of 93 million euros for the first fleet of hydrogen-powered passenger train projects.

These trains have ranges up to 1000 kilometers and a maximum speed of 140 kph. After the introduction of the first fleet of hydrogen-powered passenger trains, the hydrogen produced with renewable energy the trains will save up to 1.6 liters of diesel in a year.

The 2,600-bed Amrita Hospital in Faridabad spreads across an area of 133 acres and has been built at a cost of Rs 6000/- crores.

Amrita Hospital in Faridabad will be managed by Mata Amritanandamayi Math – a charitable organisation spearheaded by its namesake Mata Amritanandamayi.

On the technology front, the hospital will be equipped with 54 critical care units, smart ICUs and 534 critical care beds which will have digital connectivity and monitoring round the clock.

The hospital administration has also planned to develop 64 fully networked modular operation theatres.

Before Faridabad, Mata Amritanandmayi Math also built Amrita Hospital in Kochi, Kerala, which has been regularly termed as one of the premier medical institutions of South Asia.

Chief Minister M K Stalin also unveiled the ‘Tamil Nadu Footwear and Leather Products Policy 2022’.

The policy is aimed at attracting Rs 20,000 crore investment in the leather sector by 2025 and in creating employment opportunities to 2 lakh people.

The footwear and leather products policy 2022 will offer a special package for footwear and leather products manufacturing and incentives for such “design studios”.

The foundation stone for a ₹400 crore mega footwear manufacturing park in Ranipet district was also laid.

Sol.   Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited has commenced its Cow dung to Compressed Biogas Project at Sanchore, Rajasthan.

The plant, the first such under HPCL’s Waste-to-Energy portfolio, is proposed to utilize 100 tons of dung per day to produce biogas, which can be utilized as automotive fuel.

The project is being developed under GOBAR-Dhan scheme launched by Government of India in April 2018 as a part of the Biodegradable Waste Management component under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) to positively impact cleanliness and generate wealth and energy from cattle and organic waste.

Sol.   Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the 44th National Conference of Labour Ministers and Secretaries of all states and Union Territories via video conferencing.

Sol.  Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) and the Indian Navy have successfully flight-tested Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.

The flight test was carried out from an Indian Naval Ship against a high-speed unmanned aerial target for demonstration of vertical launch capability.

The missiles, equipped with indigenous Radio Frequency (RF) seeker, intercepted the target with high accuracy. The VL-SRSAM system has been indigenously designed and developed by DRDO.

Sol.  Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has launched the CM’s Micro Finance Scheme in Nagaland.

The Minister also handed over loans worth ₹205 crore to over 3,000 beneficiaries.

The Micro-finance scheme will ensure availability of affordable credit for initiating economic activities.

The funding pattern is: beneficiaries’ contribution – 10%, bank loan – 60%, back-ended subsidy by Government of Nagaland – 30%.

Sol.   As per a recent study by the think tank Pew Research Center, India’s sex ratio at birth, the number of girl children born for every 100 boys, has normalised slightly.

The data from the National Family Health Survey 2019-’21 shows that the sex ratio at birth narrowed from 109 boys per 100 girls in 2015-’16 to 108 boys per 100 girls in 2019-’21.

The average annual number of baby girls ‘missing’ in India also fell from about 8 lakh in 2010 to 4.1 lakh in 2019.

The number of boys born for every 100 girls has come down in both states — to 111 (Punjab) and 112 (Haryana) in 2019-21 from around 127 (in both) in 2001.

Sol. RBI has released the August 2022 issue of its monthly Bulletin stating that the apex bank turned Net Seller of the US Currency in June 2022 after it sold USD 3.719 billion on a net basis.

In June 2022, RBI purchased USD 18.96 billion from the spot market and sold USD 22.679 billion.

During the fiscal, RBI had net purchased USD 17.312 billion. It had bought USD 113.991 billion and sold USD 96.679 billion in the spot market in FY22.

Sol.  India’s first 3D-printed post office is set to come up in Bengaluru within a month’s time.

3D-printed post office is expected to cut construction costs to one-fourth the amount spent on a traditional model.

The Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry has given its nod to the project and its construction will be carried out by Larsen & Toubro.

The area of the building would be a 1000-square-feet. The 3D post office will cost less than 25 lakh. This cost reduces the usual construction price by 25 percent.

Sol. South Korea has once again shattered its own record for the World’s Lowest Fertility Rate.

South Korean women were estimated, based on 2021 data, to have an average of just 0.81 children over their lifetimes, down from 0.84 a year earlier.

The number of newborns declined in 2021 to 260,600, which equates to about 0.5% of the population.

According to the United Nations’ global population projections and World Bank’s data, the report further stated that Korea is the world’s fastest-ageing nation among economies with a per capita GDP of at least $30,000. By 2100, its population will fall by 53% to 24 million, up from a 43% decline forecast in 2019.

Sol. The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of the former Chief Economic Advisor (CEC) Krishnamurthy Subramaniam to the post of Executive Director (India) at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He has been appointed to the post for the period of three years from November 1, 2022.

Subramaniam will succeed the eminent economist Surjit Bhalla who was appointed as the Executive Director for India on the board of the IMF in 2019.

Krishnamurthy Subramaniam had served as the 17th Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India.

 

S72. Ans. (1) Bangladesh

Sol.  India and Bangladesh on August 25, 2022, signed two contracts for the construction of a new broad gauge line between Khulna-Darsana and the conversion of the metro gauge line into a dual gauge line between Parbatipur and Kaunia.

The contract signing ceremony was held at the Railway Ministry in Dhaka.

The 126-kilometre long Khulna-Darshana broad gauge rail line will have 147 bridges over it including 4 Girder bridges and 143 RCC box culvert bridges. The project cost is Taka 3506 crore out of which Taka 2689 crore will come from the Indian Line of Credit. The current contract is for undertaking the feasibility study with detailed engineering design for the project.

The project for the conversion of the metre gauge line from Parbatipur to Kaunia to dual gauge line will cover a distance of 57 kilometres. It has seven railway stations as well as 47 bridges including 14 girder bridges and 33 box culvert bridges.

Sol. S. President Joe Biden marked Ukraine’s Independence Day with USD 3 billion in security assistance.

Sol.   The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to develop Kannauj as a Perfume Tourism Destination.

The state government will organize an International Perfume Fair in Kannauj in December 2022.

The first phase of the perfume park being set up in the district will also be completed by November 2022.

The Uttar Pradesh government has planned to promote the perfume of Kannauj in the international market.

The aim is to take the ₹250 crore perfume business to Rs 25,000 crores.

Sol.  The NITI Aayog has declared the holy city of Haridwar in Uttarakhand as the Best Aspirational District.

Launched in 2018, NITI Aayog’s Aspirational Districts Programme aims to identify potential districts that can develop into model blocks through socio-economic development.

Sol.  The Anang Tal Lake in South Delhi has been declared a Monument of National Importance.

The mini lake, known as Anang Tal, was created in 1060 AD by Raja Anang Pal Tomar, the founder of Delhi. It lies in area between the flood plain of river and Delhi Ridge. Delhi Ridge is a Northern extension of ancient Aravalli Range.

The Monuments of National Importance are designated by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Once designated, the ASI restricts construction activity in the site’s vicinity.

Sol.  North-east state, Nagaland got its second railway station after a gap of more than 119 years with the commissioning of a new facility at Shokhuvi.

Dimapur Railway Station, in the heart of the commercial hub of the state, was inaugurated in 1903.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio flagged off the Donyi Polo Express from Shokhuvi Railway Station during the day.

The Donyi Polo Express ran daily between Guwahati in Assam and Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh. The train service has now been extended till Shokhuvi, a few kilometres from Dimapur.

The foundation stone for the 90-km-long broad gauge route from Dhansiri in Assam to Zubza in the Kohima district of Nagaland was laid in 2016, and work is underway. The deadline was extended from 2020 to 2024.

Sol.  Indian judoka Linthoi Chanambam scripted history by winning India’s first-ever medal in Judo World Championships with a gold in the Women’s 57kg category at the World Judo Cadet (U18) Championships.

The 15-year-old judoka outclassed Brazil’s Bianca Reis in the 57-kg category final.

She came into the spotlight with a gold medal at the Sub-Junior National Judo Championships in 2017 and since then she has been training at JSW’s Inspire Institute of Sports judo programme.

Chanambam won the gold medal at National Cadet Judo Championship in 2021 and followed it up with a bronze in the Asia-Oceania Cadet Judo Championship in Beirut, Lebanon.

Sol.   Parivar Kalyan Card scheme is the Uttar Pradesh government’s Family ID plan.

It was announced to establish a comprehensive database of the state’s family units and identify beneficiaries for its various schemes.

The PKC will provide a unique 12-digit ID number for each family. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) has allowed the state government to link Aadhaar data with the PKC.

Sol. The Philippines has been hit by the tropical cyclone Ma-on that has damaged the main Luzon Island in the country.

The cyclone has killed at least three people and injured four others, as per the country’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

HDFC Bank and Axis Bank witnessed the highest growth in the segment.

HDFC Bank also topped in the credit cards segment with a market share followed by SBI and ICICI Bank.

Sol.   The 38th Meeting of Ministerial level Joint Rivers Commission (JRC) of India and Bangladesh was held in New Delhi.

The two sides finalized the text of MoU on ‘Interim Water Sharing of Kushiyara River.’

India and Bangladesh share 54 rivers, of which 7 rivers have been identified earlier for developing the framework of water sharing agreements on priority.

Both sides also welcomed the finalization of the design and location of the water intake point on the Feni River to meet the drinking water needs of Sabroom town in Tripura.

Sol.  PM Narendra Modi has addressed Khadi Utsav at the Sabarmati riverfront in Ahmedabad.

The unique Khadi Utsav is being organised as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav to highlight the importance of khadi in country’s freedom struggle.

The ‘Utsav’ or festival is being organised at Sabarmati Riverfront, Ahmedabad in which around 7,500 women khadi artisans from various districts of Gujarat participated.

The event also feature an exhibition on the evolution of Charkhas.

Sol.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 27th August 2022, inaugurated the 300-metre long ‘Atal Bridge’ for pedestrians and cyclists across the Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad.

The pedestrians-and-cyclists-only bridge with eye-catching design and LED lighting is 300 metres long and 14 metres wide in the middle.

It connects the flower garden on the western end of the Sabarmati Riverfront and the upcoming arts and culture centre on the eastern end.

It has been built using 2,600 metric tonnes of steel pipes while the roof is made of colourful fabric and the railing is built with glass and stainless steel.

Sol.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 28th August, inaugurated “Smriti Van” memorial, which celebrates the resilience shown by people during the devastating 2001 earthquake in the Kutch region of Gujarat.

PM Modi said Smriti Van is a tribute to the lost lives and the remarkable fighting spirit of the people of Kutch.

The memorial has been built over nearly 470 acres to celebrate the spirit of resilience, following the death of 13,000 people during the 2001 earthquake which had its epicentre in Bhuj.

The memorial carries names of the people, who lost their lives during the earthquake. It also has a state-of-the-art Smriti Van Earthquake Museum.

Sol. 

  Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) will invest Rs 2 lakh crore to achieve net-zero operational carbon emissions by 2046.

The target set is in line with India’s aim to reach net-zero emissions by 2070.

The investment of over Rs 2 lakh crore will help mitigate emissions to about 0.7 billion metric tonnes of carbon dioxide a year by then.

The company plans to use natural gas in refineries in place of liquid fuels as well as replace grey hydrogen with green one that is manufactured from renewable power.

Sol.  Bandhan Bank will open 551 more branches in the FY 2022-23 fiscal, as part of the lender’s focus to make its distribution stronger in other parts of India outside the eastern region.

With the latest addition, the bank’s branch count will exceed 6,000.

The bank’s push for digital and tech transformation has been a great success, with 92 percent of the total transactions taking place through the digital route.
