They can steadily start taking more significant roles within the sector and their contribution to the railway will start to become visible.

Let us explore the avenues available for Junior Engineers to advance their careers in the dynamic field of railway engineering.

They can be promoted to higher positions such as :

  • Senior Section Engineer (SSE)-  After working effectively as a JE (Junior Engineer ) in the Indian Railway, the JE can be promoted to SSE. SSEs in Indian railways are responsible for the maintenance, inspection, and construction of various railway structures. The works include service buildings, staff quarters, approach roads, Water supply, bridges, tracks, and others.

Note – A JE can be promoted to SSE after three years of experience based on seniority. After 5 years, a JE can also take the Limited Departmental Competitive Examination(LDCE) which can help them qualify for the post of Assistant Engineer (AEE, AEN, AME, AMM). However, the LDCE is not conducted regularly.

  • Assistant Divisional Engineer (ADE)- The next step of promotion of JE is from SSE to ADE. The work of ADE includes execution and management of the work, and budget control of any project. He or she also monitors the quality and progress of new work. Some other important works include the maintenance of records of inspection results and proper coordination of officials of other departments.
  • Divisional Engineer (DE) -The next step of the success and promotional ladder is Divisional Engineer (DE) which involves a lot of responsible work. They are responsible for the engineering features of designs, and the accuracy and completeness of all drawings and estimates.
  • Additional Divisional Engineer(ADE) – After increasing experience and expertise, a railway junior engineer gets promoted to Additional Divisional engineer. It is a higher-level position that involves managing larger teams, making higher-level decisions, and overseeing significant tasks.
  • General Manager (GM)- With extensive experience and excellent performance, a Junior engineer can also become a General Manager whose expertise and acumen make him/her manage all the railway operations, make important decisions, and improve the overall efficiency of all working systems.

Salary is an important aspect that an aspirant looks for when he/she has started targeting the government arena in the engineering sector. While the pay scale of a government engineer in India is fairly decent, the variations in the salaries for different government areas are an observed reality.

There are ample institutions and departments where the Central and State governments hire talented engineers through computer-based tests (CBT) like GATE, SSC JE, RRB JE, DMRC JE, DDA JE, and others.  Candidates preparing for these exams need to be completely aware of the salaries these organizations are offering and the increment in salary after the 7th pay commission. Of the changing needs, rising inflation, and cost of living, we’ve seen time to time salary increments in various government sectors. Here you can find the complete details regarding the salaries provided by various government sectors to its employees.

PSU

Working at PSU (Public Sector Undertaking ) offers a mammoth of perks and advantages that pull an aspirant towards them. Handsome salary, suitable allowances, and a working environment that thrives employee growth are some of the advantageous factors rewiring an engineering graduate destination towards these PSUs. The GATE(Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering ) exam is the way towards the PSU. A proper procedure including the Computer-based test followed by interview calls and other assessing skills like GD ( Group Discussion) is the journey to reach PSU for any engineering graduate seeking a job at PSU.

The salary structure of different PSUs are not identical to each other but they all are within a respected range of pay. Along with the salary, allowances such as Dearness allowance (DA), House rent allowance ( HRA), Medical allowance, and other allowances are consistently given.

The estimated pay range of some of the important PSU is given below:

If the CSE ( Civil services examinations ) is a door to excellence for all graduates, the IES( Indian Engineering Services) is for engineering graduates. Since the conducting body is UPSC, one can decipher the level of the exam. Nonetheless, the reward after cracking this exam is immense. The basic pay for an IES officer ranges from Rs 15,600 -Rs 39,100 with a grade pay of Rs 5400. The salary is based on Pay matrix level 10 of the 7th pay commission and is revised periodically.

Salary of a scientist at ISRO/ BARC/DRDO

Countries like ISRO, BARC, and DRDO recruit engineers for the post of scientist through the exams conducted by these bodies. These exams present a great opportunity for engineering graduates with a scientific zeal and an unflinching creativity to explore space science, defense research, and nuclear exploration.  Along with the expanding work environment they provide, they also give attractive salaries.  The salary range of these three institutions is given in the table below.
