    Question

Which of the following is the world’s largest desert?

    A.

    Sahara

    B.

    Kalahari

    C.

    Gobi

    D.

    Thar

    Correct option is A

    The correct answer is Sahara
The Sahara Desert is the largest hot desert in the world and the third-largest desert overall, after Antarctica and the Arctic, which are technically classified as cold deserts. The Sahara covers approximately 9.2 million square kilometers (3.6 million square miles), which is nearly equivalent in size to the entire United States of America.
Located in North Africa, the Sahara stretches from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to the Red Sea in the east, and from the Mediterranean Sea in the north to the Sahel region in the south.
    Information Booster:
    Geographical Facts:
    · Countries it spans: Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Sudan, and Tunisia.
    · Topography: The Sahara contains dunes (ergs), gravel plains (regs), rocky plateaus (hamadas), salt flats, mountains, and scattered oases.
    · Climate: Extremely arid, with annual rainfall often less than 25 mm. Daytime temperatures can exceed 50°C, while nights can be freezing.
    · Despite its harsh climate, the Sahara has supported life and human settlements for thousands of years. It was once a lush, green landscape during the Holocene epoch, around 10,000 years ago.
    · It is home to nomadic tribes, including the Tuareg, and supports specially adapted flora and fauna.
    · The Sahara has also been historically significant as a part of ancient trans-Saharan trade routes, especially for salt, gold, and slaves.
    Additional Knowledge:
    · Kalahari Desert: Located in southern Africa, mainly in Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. It is semi-arid and much smaller (about 900,000 sq km).
    · Gobi Desert: A cold desert in northern China and southern Mongolia, covering about 1.3 million sq km—far smaller than the Sahara.
    · Thar Desert: Located in northwestern India and eastern Pakistan, it spans around 200,000 sq km—significantly smaller than Sahara.
