The 86th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2002 made the Right to Education a Fundamental Right.
It inserted Article 21A in the Constitution.
Article 21A guarantees free and compulsory education to all children aged 6 to 14 years.
Came into effect on 1st April 2010 with the enactment of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009.
Fundamental Rights are covered under Part III of the Indian Constitution.
Article 45 (Directive Principle) was also amended to change the age limit from 14 to 6 years.
This was a major step towards achieving universal elementary education in India.
The RTE Act mandates:
No capitation fees or screening for admission
