Question

What is the equivalent discount percentage corresponding to two successive discounts of 9% and 17% ?

A.

27.53%

B.

26.47%

C.

26.00%

D.

24.47%

Correct option is D

Given:
two successive discounts of 9% and 17%.
Concept Used:
SP after discount = MP×(1Discount%100)MP \times \left(1 - \frac{Discount\%}{100} \right)
Solution:
Let the Marked Price, MP = ₹ 100
Now, 100×91100×83100=75.53100 \times \frac{91}{100}\times\frac{83}{100} = 75.53
so discount = 100 - 75.53 = 24.47
Discount % = 24.47100×100=24.47%\frac{24.47}{100}\times 100 = 24.47\%

Alternate Method:
Using the formula ;
x+y+xy100x+y+\frac{xy}{100}
For two successive discounts, x is negative and y is also negative.
