Question

Two successive discounts of 40% and 60% on a deal are equivalent to a single discount of:

A.

76%

B.

70%

C.

80%

D.

66%

Correct option is A

Given:

Two discount are 40% and 60%

Formula Used:

Successive Discount Formula =d1+d2d1d2100 d_1 + d_2 - \frac{d_1 d_2}{100}

Solution:

Let the original value be 100

Then first discount = 40% of 100 = 40

Value after first discount = 100 - 40 = 60

Second discount = 60% of 60 = 36

Value after second discount = 60 - 36 = 24

Total equivalent discount = 100 - 24 = 76%

Alternative Method:

Using successive discount formula =40+60(40)(60)100 40 + 60 - \frac{(40)(60)}{100}

= 100 - 24

= 76%
