Question

Two successive discounts of 25% and 10% on a deal are equivalent to a single discount of:

A.

32%

B.

34.5%

C.

32.5%

D.

35%

Correct option is C

Given:

Two discount are 25% and 10%

Formula Used:

Successive Discount Formula =d1+d2d1d2100 d_1 + d_2 - \frac{d_1 d_2}{100}

Solution:

Let the original value be 100

Then first discount = 25% of 100 = 25

Value after first discount = 100 - 25 = 75

Second discount = 10% of 75 = 7.5

Value after second discount = 75 - 7.5 =67.5

Total equivalent discount = 100 - 67.5 = 32.5%

Alternative Method:

Using successive discount formula =25+10(25)(10)100=352.5=32.5%25 + 10 - \frac{(25)(10)}{100} = 35- 2.5 = 32.5\%
