Question

Two plumbers, X and Y, are paid a total of ₹660 per day by their employer. If X is paid 120% of the sum paid to Y, then how much is Y paid per day?

A.

₹200

B.

₹300

C.

₹250

D.

₹350

Correct option is B

Given:
Total payment to plumbers X and Y per day = ₹660.
X is paid 120% of the sum paid to Y.
Solution:
Let the payment to Y be ₹ y.
Then, the payment to X is ₹1.2y.
The total payment is:
y + 1.2y = 660
2.2y = 660
y=6602.2=300y = \frac{660}{2.2} = 300
Alternate Method:
Let the payment to Y be ₹y .
Since X is paid 120% of Y, the ratio of payments to X and Y is 120 : 100 , which simplifies to 6 : 5 .
Let the common ratio factor be  k . Then:
Payment to X=6k,Payment to Y=5k\text{Payment to X} = 6k, \quad \text{Payment to Y} = 5k
The total payment is:
6k + 5k = 11k = 660
k=66011=60k = \frac{660}{11} = 60
Payment to Y:
5k=5×60=3005k = 5 \times 60 = 300
