Given:

Two numbers are in the ration of 5 : 3.  

Difference between the numbers is 54 

Solution: 

Let the first number = 5x 

second number = 3x 

According to the question 

5x - 3x = 54 

2x = 54 

x = 27 

Then the smaller number = 3x = 3 ×\times​27 = 81
