Question

Two numbers are in the ratio 5 : 3, and the difference between these two numbers is 34 . Find the smaller of the two numbers.

A.

21

B.

85

C.

31

D.

51

Correct option is D

Given:

Ratio of the two numbers = 5:3

Difference between the numbers = 34

Solution:

Let the numbers be 5x and 3x

Difference of parts in the ratio = 5x − 3x = 2x

So,

2x = 34

x  = 342\frac{34}2

x = 17

Smaller number = 17×317\times3 = 51
