Question

Two numbers are in the ratio 2 : 3; if 20 is added to 20% of the smaller number, it will be equal to 10% of the larger number plus 25. Then, the smaller number is: ___________.

A.

100

B.

180

C.

160

D.

200

Correct option is A

Given:

Two numbers are in the ratio 2 : 3

Solution:

Let the smaller number = 2x, and the larger number = 3x

20% of smaller + 20 = 10% of larger +25

2x5+20=3x10+25\frac{2x}{5} + 20 = \frac{3x}{10} + 25

4x + 200 = 3x + 250

4x - 3x = 250 - 200

x = 50

Smaller number = 2x=2×50=100x = 2 \times 50 =100

The smaller number is 100.
