    Question

    Two equal circles of radius 8 cm intersect each other in such a way that each passes through the centre of the other. The length of the common chord is:

    A.

    83 cm8\sqrt3 \ cm

    B.

    3 cm\sqrt3 \ cm

    C.

    23 cm2\sqrt3 \ cm

    D.

    43 cm4\sqrt3 \ cm

    Correct option is A

    Solution:

    According to diagram,

    AD = BD

    O1O2=8O_1O_2 = 8

    O1A=O2AO_1A = O_2A = 8 (Radius of the circle)

    ADO1=90\angle ADO_1 = 90^\circ

    O1D=O2D=4O_1D = O_2D = 4

    AD = 6416=48=43 \sqrt{64 - 16} = \sqrt{48} = 4\sqrt{3}

    AB = 2 × AD = 2×43=83 cm2 \times 4\sqrt{3} = 8\sqrt{3} \text{ cm}
