Question

There is a 32 l mixture of milk and water. The ratio of milk and water in this mixture is 5 : 3. How many litres of water shouldbe added to this mixture so that the resultant mixture has 50% water in it?

A.

8

B.

6

C.

5

D.

4

Correct option is A

Given:

Total mixture = 32 L

Ratio of milk to water = 5 : 3

Solution:

Let the quantity of milk and water be M and W respectively, then

Initial Quantities of Milk and Water:

M = 58×32 \frac{5}{8} \times 32 = 20 L

W =  38×32\frac{3}{8} \times 32 = 12 L

Let x be the additional water added.
Since we want 50% water, the final mixture should have equal amounts of milk and water:

20 = 12 + x

x = 8

8 litres of water should be added.
