Question

The single discount on some amount which is equivalent to successive discounts of 10%, 20% and 28% on the same amount is equal to:

A.

50%

B.

48.32 %

C.

48.16%

D.

38.16%

Correct option is C

Given:

Successive discounts: 10%, 20%, and 28%

Formula Used:

Use the formula for successive discounts:

Single Discount (D) = 100[1(1d1100)(1d2100)(1d3100)]100 \left[1 - \left(1 - \frac{d_1}{100}\right)\left(1 - \frac{d_2}{100}\right)\left(1 - \frac{d_3}{100}\right)\right]

Solution:

D = 100[1(110100)(120100)(128100)]100 \left[1 - \left(1 - \frac{10}{100}\right)\left(1 - \frac{20}{100}\right)\left(1 - \frac{28}{100}\right)\right]

=100[1(0.90×0.80×0.72)]= 100 \left[1 - (0.90 \times 0.80 \times 0.72)\right]

=100×(10.5184)= 100 \times (1 - 0.5184)

=100×0.4816= 100 \times 0.4816

=48.16%= 48.16\%

Thus, The single equivalent discount is 48.16%
