Question

The price of fuel decreases by 35%, 60% and 10% in three successive months but increases by 65% in the fourth month. What is the percentage increase/decrease in the price of fuel in the fourth month as compared to its original price?

A.

Increases by 63.54%

B.

Decreases by 61.39%

C.

Decreases by 60.08%

D.

Increases by 67.46%

Correct option is B

Given
First month: Decreases by 35%
Second month: Decreases by 60%
Third month: Decreases by 10%
Fourth month: Increases by 65%
Formula Used
Final Value = Initial Value × (1±r100)(1 ± \frac{r}{100})
Solution
Let the original price be 100.
Price after 1st month = 100 × (1 - 0.35) = 65
Price after 2nd month = 65 × (1 - 0.60) = 65 × 0.40 = 26
Price after 3rd month = 26 × (1 - 0.10) = 26 × 0.90 = 23.4
Price after 4th month = 23.4 × (1 + 0.65) = 23.4 × 1.65 = 38.61
Total decrease = 100 - 38.61 = 61.39
Percentage decrease = 61.39%
Final Answer
So the correct answer is (b)
