Question

The mode and median of a data set is 28.4 and 88, respectively. What is the mean of the data set? (Use empirical formula.)

A.

114.2

B.

119.2

C.

117.8

D.

127.7

Correct option is C

Given:

Mode = 28.4

Median = 88

Formula Used:

Mode = 2 × Mean - 3 × Median

can be written as;

Mean = 3×MedianMode2\frac{3 \times \text{Median} - \text{Mode}}{2}

Solution:

Mean = 3×8828.42 \frac{3 \times 88 - 28.4}{2}

=26428.42= \frac{264 - 28.4}{2}

=235.62= \frac{235.6}{2} = 117.8

Thus, the mean of the data set is 117.8
