Question

The given histogram shows average percentage score of boys and girls in an examination during the years 2014 – 2018.

What is the ratio of the absolute difference in percentage scores of boys and girls in 2014 as compared to the absolute difference in their percentage scores in 2018?

A.

1 : 4

B.

4  : 1

C.

1 : 3

D.

3 : 4

Correct option is A

Given:

Histogram shows average percentage score of boys and girls in an examination during the years 2014 – 2018.

Solution:

In 2014:

Boys' score = 65

Girls' score = 60

Absolute difference = 65 − 60 = 5

In 2018:

Boys' score = 60

Girls' score = 80

Absolute difference = 80 − 60=20

The ratio of the absolute differences is:

Ratio: Difference in 2014Difference in 2018\frac{Difference in 2014}{Difference in 2018} = 520=14\frac{5}{20} = \frac{1}{4}

The ratio is 1:4.

Thus, correct answer is (a) 1: 4
