Question

The given graph shows the percentage-wise distribution of different mobile phone models (A to F) produced by a mobile company in 2008 and 2009. The total number of mobile phones produced in 2008 was 4,50,000 and that in 2009 was 6,40,000.

(If a value for any model in between a range, consider it to be at midpoint, e.g any point between 10 and 20 should be considered 15.)

If 90% of Model C sets produced by the company were sold each year, then how many of them were remaining at the end of 2009?

A.

6,000

B.

18,600

C.

96,000

D.

1,67,400

Correct option is B

Given:

Total number of mobile phones produced in 2008 = 4,50,000

Total number of mobile phones produced in 2009 = 6,40,000

Solution:

From the graph:

In 2008, the percentage of Model C phones produced = 20%.

In 2009, the percentage of Model C phones produced = 15%.

For 2008:

Number of Model C phones produced in 2008 = 20% of 4,50,000

=20100×4,50,000=90,000 phones= \frac{20}{100} \times 4,50,000 = 90,000 \text{ phones}

For 2009:

Number of Model C phones produced in 2009 = 15% of 6,40,000

=15100×6,40,000=96,000 phones= \frac{15}{100} \times 6,40,000 = 96,000 \text{ phones}

90% of the Model C phones produced each year were sold.

For 2008:

Number of Model C phones sold in 2008 = 90% of 90,000

=90100×90,000=81,000 phones= \frac{90}{100} \times 90,000 = 81,000 \text{ phones}

For 2009:

Number of Model C phones sold in 2009 = 90% of 64,000

=90100×96,000=86,400 phones= \frac{90}{100} \times 96,000 = 86,400 \text{ phones}

Phones that were not sold in 2008 remain as inventory into 2009.

Remaining Model C phones from 2008:

Phones remaining from 2008 = Total produced in 2008 - Phones sold in 2008

=90,000−81,000 = 9,000 phones

Remaining Model C phones from 2009:

Phones remaining from 2009 = Total produced in 2009 - Phones sold in 2009

= 96,000 - 86,400 = 9,600 phones

Total remaining Model C phones at the end of 2009.

Total remaining Model C phones = 9,600 + 9,000 = 18,600 phones
