Question

The denominator of a fraction is 2 more than the numerator. When the numerator is multiplied by 3 and the denominator is multiplied by 2 the fraction becomes 1/2 The given fraction is:

A.

2/3

B.

1/3

C.

1/4

D.

2/5

Correct option is B

Solution:

Let the numerator of the fraction be x
Then the denominator will be x + 2

The fraction is then

xx+2.\frac{x}{x+2} .

According to Question

3x2(x+2)=12\frac{3x}{2(x+2)}= \frac{1}{2}

Cross-multiply to eliminate the fractions:
6x = 2(x + 2)
Expanding the right-hand side:
6x = 2x + 4
x = 1
Thus, the numerator is 1

the denominator is 1 + 2 = 3

So, fraction = 1/3
