Question

The average of 36 numbers is 50. If we subtract a number 'T' from each number, then the average becomes 27. What is the value of T?

A.

27

B.

24

C.

22

D.

23

Correct option is D

Given:
Average of 36 numbers = 50
A number ‘T’ is subtracted from each number
New average = 27
Formula Used:
New Average = Old Average – T
Solution:
 When a constant is subtracted from each number in a set, the average of the set decreases by that constant.
Old Average = 50
New Average = 27
So,
27 = 50 – T
T = 50 – 27
T = 23
Alternate Solution:
Average of 36 numbers = 50
Total sum of 36 numbers = 36 × 50 = 1800
New Sum = 36 × 27 = 972
Old Sum = 1800
So,
972 = 1800 – 36T
36T = 1800 – 972 = 828
T = 828 ÷ 36 = 23
