Question

The area, in square units, of a triangle formed by the coordinate axis and the straight line 5x + 7y = 35 is:

A.

235\frac{2}{35}

B.

352\frac{35}{2}

C.

252\frac{25}{2}

D.

35

Correct option is B

Given:

The equation of the line: 5x + 7y = 35

The coordinate  are the x-axis and y-axis.

Formula used:

The area of the triangle formed by the line and the coordinate axes can be calculated using the formula:

Area = 12×base×height\frac{1}{2} \times base \times height

where:

base = x-intercept (where y = 0)

height = y-intercept (where x = 0)

Solution:

x-intercept:  y = 0 in the equation 5x + 7y = 35

5x = 35

x = 7

So, the x-intercept is (7,0)(7, 0) (7,0)

y-intercept: x = 0 in the equation 5x + 7y = 35

7y = 35

y = 5

So, the y-intercept is (0,5)

Now, The area:

Base = x-intercept = 7

Height = y-intercept = 5

Area = 12×7×5\frac{1}{2} \times 7 \times 5 = 352\frac{35}2

The area of the triangle is 352\frac{35}2
