Question

Six persons went to a hotel to have their meals. Five of them spent Rs. 30 each on their meals. The sixth person spent Rs. 50 more than the average expenditure of all the six. What was the total money spent by all the persons?

A.

Rs. 270

B.

Rs. 240

C.

Rs. 300

D.

Rs. 264

Correct option is B

Given:

5 persons spent ₹30 each
6th person spent ₹50 more than the average expenditure of all 6 persons

Formula Used:

Average=Sum of all observationsNumber of observations\text{Average} = \frac{\text{Sum of all observations}}{\text{Number of observations}}

Solution:

Let the average expenditure be x.
Then total expenditure = 6x, and the 6th person spent x + 50.
Also, total of the first 5 = 5 × 30 = ₹150

Total Expenditure = 150 + (x + 50)

6x = 200+ x

5x = 200

x = 40

Total expenditure = 6x = 6 × 40 = ₹ 240
