Solution:

Let the number of pens be x and number of pencils be y

Then x+ y = 60   ….(1)

According to question:

(x+25) = 3(y-5)

x+25 = 3y -15

x =3y - 40

Substituting the value of x in eq(1)

(3y-40)+y = 60

4y=60+40

y=25

Then x= 60-25= 35

Difference in number of pens and pencils = 35-25 = 10
