Information Booster:
Christopher Marlowe (1564–1593) – A playwright of the Elizabethan era, known for Doctor Faustus, Tamburlaine, and The Jew of Malta. He influenced Shakespeare’s dramatic style.
William Shakespeare (1564–1616) – The most famous English playwright, known for tragedies (Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear), comedies (A Midsummer Night's Dream, Twelfth Night), and histories.
T. S. Eliot (1888–1965) – A modernist poet and dramatist, best known for The Waste Land, Four Quartets, and Murder in the Cathedral, which explores themes of martyrdom and faith.

Doctor Faustus and Renaissance Tragedy – Doctor Faustus, tragedy in five acts by Christopher Marlowe, published in 1604 but first performed a decade or so earlier. Marlowe’s play followed by only a few years the first translation into English of the medieval legend on which the play is based. In Doctor Faustus Marlowe retells the story of Faust, the doctor-turned-necromancer, who makes a pact with the devil in order to obtain knowledge and power. Both Doctor Faustus and Mephistopheles, who is the devil’s intermediary in the play, are subtly and powerfully portrayed. Marlowe examines Faustus’s grandiose intellectual ambitions, revealing them as futile, self-destructive, and absurd.

Hamlet and the Supernatural – Shakespeare’s Hamlet is famous for its exploration of revenge, madness, and the supernatural, as seen in the ghost scene. It is Shakespeare's longest play. Set in Denmark, the play depicts Prince Hamlet and his attempts to exact revenge against his uncle, Claudius, who has murdered Hamlet's father in order to seize his throne and marry Hamlet's mother. Hamlet is considered among the "most powerful and influential tragedies in the English language", with a story capable of "seemingly endless retelling and adaptation by others". It is widely considered one of the greatest plays of all time.

Murder in the Cathedral and Religious Drama – T. S. Eliot’s play presents the historical murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket, emphasizing themes of faith, power, and destiny. Murder in the Cathedral is a verse drama by T. S. Eliot, first performed in 1935 (published the same year). The play portrays the assassination of Archbishop Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral during the reign of Henry II in 1170. Eliot drew heavily on the writing of Edward Grim, a clerk who was an eyewitness to the event.
