Cause:
Serious viral disease transmitted by leafhoppers ( Cestius phycitis and Amrasca biguttula biguttula).
Symptoms:
Leaves turn light yellow, become smaller, and malformed.
Plants grow bushy with shortened petioles and internodes.
Deformed flowers result in sterility.
Infected plants bear no fruit, or the fruit becomes hard and fails to mature.
Control Measures:
Sanitation: Remove infected plants and susceptible volunteer crops.
Cultural Practices:
Use barrier or trap crops.
Adjust sowing time to avoid peak leafhopper activity.
Chemical Control: Spray Malathion (2 ml/litre of water) at the onset of leafhopper infestation.
