Question

In a mixture of 280 litres, milk and water are in the ratio 4:3. If the ratio is required to be 1:2, then how many litres of water is to be added?

A.

200

B.

240

C.

120

D.

160

Correct option is A

Total mixture = 280 litres
Ratio of milk to water = 4:3
Total parts = 4 + 3 = 7
Milk quantity = (4/7) x 280 = 160 litres
Water quantity = (3/7) x 280 = 120 litres
New ratio of milk to water = 1:2
Milk quantity remains the same (160 litres).
Let the new water quantity be 'x' litres.
160/x = 1/2
x = 160 x 2 = 320 litres
Water to be added = New water quantity - Initial water quantity
Water to be added = 320 - 120 = 200 litres
Therefore, 200 litres of water must be added.
