Question

If we add 1 to the numerator and subtract 1 from the denominator of a given fraction, it becomes 1 . It becomes 2/3 if 1 is added to the denominator of the given fraction while the numerator is left unchanged. The fraction originally given is:

A.

58\frac58

B.

68\frac68

C.

18\frac18

D.

38\frac38

Correct option is B

Given:

xy\frac{x}{y}

If 1 is added to the numerator and 1 is subtracted from the denominator, the fraction becomes 1

x+1y1=1\frac{x+1}{y-1} = 1

If 1 is added to the denominator, the fraction becomes 23\frac{2}{3}

xy+1=23\frac{x}{y+1} = \frac{2}{3}

Solution:

3(y - 2) = 2y + 2

3y - 6 = 2y + 2

y - 6 = 2

y = 8

Now substitute y = 8 into

x = y - 2

x = 8 - 2 = 6
