Question

If the numerator of a fraction is decreased by 80% and the denominator of the fraction is decreased by 60%, then the resultant fraction is 56\frac{5}{6}. What is the original fraction?

A.

35\frac{3}{5}

B.

73\frac{7}{3}

C.

53\frac{5}{3}

D.

65\frac{6}{5}

Correct option is C

Given:
Numerator is decreased by 80% → New numerator = 20% of original numerator = 15\frac{1}{5}  of original
Denominator is decreased by 60% → New denominator = 40% of original denominator =25 \frac{2}{5} of original
Resultant fraction =56 \frac{5}{6}
Solution:
Let the original fraction be xy \frac{x}{y} .

New numeratorNew denominator=15x25y=x2y\frac{\text{New numerator}}{\text{New denominator}} = \frac{\frac{1}{5}x}{\frac{2}{5}y} = \frac{x}{2y}
x2y=56\frac{x}{2y} = \frac{5}{6}
xy=56×2=106=53\frac{x}{y} = \frac{5}{6} \times 2 = \frac{10}{6} = \frac{5}{3}
